It sits with me
Like a warm old friend
No need for much between us.
It waits for me to turn my thoughts
And lips toward it
Taking in its heady aroma.
The cool turn of the morning
Allows me to see the warmth that waits
Its swirls its magic up, up, up.
I stop my fingers on the keys
Long enough to grasp the familiar
The handle of this old red cup.
I carefully swallow the heat
The depth of the blend appeals.
Black, sweet, rich, pure.
I close my eyes with a sigh
Yes, this is love between
This first cup and I.
Each morning I look forward
To this shared moment.
This first cup starts the day.
I stay true to the relationship
I very rarely stray
To another cup of coffee in the day.
Some bonds are meant to be strong
Like the coffee in my morning cup
Some last all day long.
Some moments of a day
Are more like ritual
They bring the sacred to the ordinary.
Like a warm old friend
No need for much between us.
It waits for me to turn my thoughts
And lips toward it
Taking in its heady aroma.
The cool turn of the morning
Allows me to see the warmth that waits
Its swirls its magic up, up, up.
I stop my fingers on the keys
Long enough to grasp the familiar
The handle of this old red cup.
I carefully swallow the heat
The depth of the blend appeals.
Black, sweet, rich, pure.
I close my eyes with a sigh
Yes, this is love between
This first cup and I.
Each morning I look forward
To this shared moment.
This first cup starts the day.
I stay true to the relationship
I very rarely stray
To another cup of coffee in the day.
Some bonds are meant to be strong
Like the coffee in my morning cup
Some last all day long.
Some moments of a day
Are more like ritual
They bring the sacred to the ordinary.

I'm not a big coffee drinker but after reading your post, I had to have a cup!
Cheers.
Sunny :)
Hmmmm, reading this I realized that my first cup got interrupted and it sits waiting for me on the counter. Gotta run ... it's calling!
Thanks for sharing the lovely poem as I sit and drink my morning cup of coffee with you!
I'll be looking forward to seeing your promotional posters hit the walls at Starbucks. :)
Now you have me craving a second cup. That would make me shaky. Oh wait, I already am...
Oh I love it. I am a morning coffee drinker as well, and I just finished my cup. :)
Being an avid coffee drinker, I simply loved this and can relate to that first cup!~
I have a mug I feel that way about, the mug AND the sunday cup o'java that goes in it ... now if I could just keep my oldest male child from absconding with the mug all the time, the little shite!!!
It's the morning love affair so many people have with coffee that makes me wish I liked it. Words like yours make it sound so appealing. But alas, I do not drink coffee.
But....
You will love the coffee at my house!!!! I make a good cup, or so I'm told. I'll even get a red mug for you!
xo
Yup I am with you here...loooove my coffee and the very first cup of the day is without doubt the best. Wonderful post and I so want that cup!!!! Whoo hoo!! The post - divine!!!
Hugs to you hon, Sarah
I so would love to have a cup right now but damn, I've already had my daily two-cup limit...I no longer have the cast iron stomach I had in my youth.
I think you should approach Starbucks and Tims(Canadian eh!) and pitch your poem. You might become rich and famous and then you could jet off to my pickle empire and we can have coffee together while we discuss our next big venture.
Holly ,
Being a coffee lover your poem makes me look forward eagerly to tomorrow's cup in the morning(It is 10.30p.m.over here)

Holly I totally love my first cup, missing my rich coffee creamer, but now I can taste the coffee...Love the scottie coasters. Have a great day.
I was able to get up fine without coffee today but after reading this I just might have to get myself one.
my morning... with my cup...is a ritual no doubt !!
and don't mess with me until that cup is dirty and in the sink :)
Mmmmmmmmm. I saw the swirls!
My thoughts exactly - I just can't get them down on paper so emotionally.

Since I'm finally getting to comments at the end of the day, I read yours and still want that first cup! Do I hear a commercial for a coffee company calling?
I'm not a coffee drinker, but I enjoyed your post.
