Only Four Questions of Value

This song continues to be my all-time favorite.  Can any of us really say why a song stands out so importantly?  Probably because of the time and place one first heard it.  Maybe it reminds us of a friend or lover and the poignant remembering of them.

Evan and I were talking one day about dating and how men and women are so different that it's hard to know what to do to make anyone happy.  I said, "If you want to know what women want, go listen, really listen to Bryan Adam's song, Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?

He answered, "I wish I had money for every time a girl has said that to me..." then I countered, "If that many females have said it, then it's really simple to do your homework and listen.  It's a roadmap for what to do."

So why is this song so wonderful? For me, it's the Flamenco guitar played so fluidly by the great late, Paco de Lucia and the dreamy waltz quality of the music. And most certainly it's the intensely personal lyrics.  It's the passionate, intimate way that Adams sings this song.

I suppose I love it because it takes something so complex and boils it down to the essence of how to live when one is in love.

And for my readers who can't get enough of Johnny Depp, feast your eyes on this one while you listen to Chris Daughtry croon his version of this glorious song.

"There are only four questions of value in life...
 What is sacred?
Of what is the spirit made?
 What is worth living for?
And, what is worth dying for?
The answer to each is the same; only love."

Go through you day with love as your focus.  And know that women and men aren't that complicated. We simply hope for a love that we can see and feel every day expressed in the little things.  For, the little things are always the big things.

A Moment of Truth & Beauty

Yesterday, I raced in the door at T.K. Salon for my standing every four week haircut and chat with Noelle, my wonderful stylist.  Each month I walk in looking like I have a shrub on top my head and walk out looking like a Human Being with an individual sense of style.

My short, bed head hair and the fact that I've decided to embrace my white/silver color is not the choice most or many would make.  But, it is me.  And, well, for me it works.  As far as I'm concerned, a good stylist is nothing short of a miracle worker.  A visit with Noelle means that at least a few minutes each month, I feel better about mySelf.  A few minutes when I think I can still see that I was pretty.

In my hurry to catch up on the bits of news since my last visit, it barely registered that there was an elderly woman getting her hair washed while Noelle and I chatted.  I smiled at the other people there, but didn't pay close attention, save that it is rare to see an elderly woman at the shop.  I sat in Noelle's chair and my cut commenced.

The older woman was now seated next to me having an ongoing conversation with her daughter with an occasional comment to the stylist.  Daughter said, looking up from her magazine, "Mom, Danielle Steel has a new book out, have you read it?"  Mom replied, "No, I haven't even caught up with the last two she wrote.  Why don't you buy them for me?"

Daughter replies, "Mom, I don't even know the titles of her last two books!"  And then a bit later, "Mom, you should use some product in your hair that will help you keep up with this new do of yours!"

Mom to Daughter, "Okay, (side comment to the stylist, "I assume you sell that stuff here?" Affirmative nod from the stylist,) you buy it from Theresa here and I'll use it."

Noelle and I looked at each other via the mirror and both smiled.  Mom is no slouch!  Not going to use here money on frivolity, but if Daughter with her bright ideas wants to contribute, out standing! Go Mom!

It was a few moments later that we heard the first exclamation that stopped our chat, "Oh Theresa! Look at it!  Oh look!"  Noelle looked over and smiled.  The old girl was smiling really huge looking at herSelf in the mirror.  I said very quietly, "Wow, she really seems to like it!"  and Noelle smiling said, "Yes!  It's so wonderful when that happens."

A little while later the New Old Girl said to her daughter, "Karen!  Just look!  Isn't it wonderful?!  Oh!"  Major affirmation from her daughter, "Yes indeed, Mom, you look beautiful!  Great job, Theresa!"

It occured to me that I was paying witness to one of those rare moments of Beautiful Truth.  The moment when we see the truth of who we are, when we can stand in agreement with ourSelf instead of picking at our faults; or accepting with a sigh the things we so dislike about ourSelf.  The moment when we feel, PRETTY!  A moment when we can actually see what others see!  A moment of positive affirmation.

That  rare sort of feeling is contagious.  Everyone around gets to remember that possibility.  That joy. That beautiful truth.  The moment when we do more than accept our shortcomings or the things about ourSelf that we don't like but have learned to live with.  A moment when we actually see ourSelf in the mirror instead of glancing to make sure we don't have spinach in our teeth and then quickly away because we are disappointed in the reflection.

A divine moment when the authentic beauty that is inside spills out so you can see I AM!

Noelle said, "That right there is why we do this job.  The chance to make every person who sits down feel better.  To feel pretty!  But that doesn't come very often so they're special when they do."  We sat quietly as we realized that the woman was hugging Theresa and even crying.  She repeated, "Oh look at the color!  It's perfect.  Theresa, it's just perfect!  Not bad at all for an 80 year old gal!"  We all totally agreed.

When I got up to leave, I passed her and said, "You really look so pretty.  Can I give you a hug because you made my day!"  She put up her arms and we embraced.  "Thank you," I whispered, "I'm so glad I was here today."

I met up with her daughter paying at the counter.  I said, "I am so happy for her.  And Theresa, how wonderful for you to have this moment.  You gave her the chance to remember that she isbeautiful!" Her daughter, all smiles said, "I know, it's really something isn't it?!"  I nodded.

It certainly is.  A moment of beautiful truth.  We are never too old to be reminded.  Never too young to wonder.

May you find your moment of Beautiful Truth.  Even if it is for the briefest of moments.  May you be reminded how beautiful a creation you truly are.  Because, trust me, we all can see that about you every time we look at you.

They Grow Up So Fast

Fiona, Rory & Argyle

My kids, like yours, grow up when you're not looking.  They simply refuse to stay babies or puppies.  And, neither did we.  Each inch they gain, gives us a chance, as mothers, as women, to reinvent ourselves.  Consider how to be in the best relationship with them.  Consider how to best mentor and guide.  Consider how much they teach us.  Consider how to best love them into their full potential.  Just as someone who loved us did for us.

This Mother's Day, I hope you feel honored for all you have invested of yourself.  For all you have done and do each day.  This Mother's Day, I hope you can feel the strength of being a part of the long line of those women, and in cases like mine, the men, who have dedicated part of their lives and hearts to see the blossoming of a young soul.

Smile and be glad; you so deserve it.  Happy Mother's Day.

The Art of The Apology

I think one of the most difficult arts to learn, is the art of the sincere apology.  I'd be a liar if I told you that it's easy to learn, easy to do, and that you'll really look forward to the time(s) when you'll have to practice this hard-earned skill.

Because it's so hard to learn, most of us avoid learning how to do it well for a very long time.  Hell, some people never learn to do it.  For them, it will always be your failing if you took their meaning the wrong way, or you are just too sensitive or whatever...  But, it's not you; it's them.  And, don't worry, they'll have their turn at having their feelings hurt or dismissed...it will happen and hopefully, they'll start to figure it out.

For now though, I want to consider how one acquires the skill of the true apology.  And, honestly I don't know the answer.  I suppose that one day you stop letting your Ego run the show.  You stop listening to it when it says, "Really, what's wrong with them? They need to just get over it.  It's stupid how they feel, and I won't support them in this craziness!"  Yep, Ego keeps you from being able to reach out and humble yourself when an apology is truly required.

The fact is, it's not necessary for you to be able to understand or relate to why an individual has been hurt by anything you've said or done.  You simply need to accept that they feel this way.  And then the next step...

...is being humbled enough to deal with the uncomfortable, itchy feeling you get when you are clearly aware you've hurt someone and need to say the words, "I'm truly sorry if I hurt you."

Once you've done it a few times, while it doesn't come easier, it seems to come quicker.  And, those precious moments that can save a relationship aren't squandered.  When a true apology comes sooner rather than later, you get the chance to start over.

And here's the place where I've finally arrived, thanks to having had to give my share of apologies for being thoughtless or flip or unkind or stupid or fill in the blank...now, I think before I open my pie hole.  Now I carefully consider if what I'm about to do or say will contribute in a positive way to the situation.  If not, I'm now old enough to realize it's not always about me and what I want or think.  I'm able to keep my mouth closed.  Even so, I'm still not past the point where I'll never have to apologize again.  But it does seem to be less frequent.

Since I don't like to apologize, and let's face it, none of us does, I've learned that if I keep my thoughts to myself and consider the other person more than I think about myself, I don't have to apologize nearly as much.

SCORE!

Julia Cameron Has Ruined My Life!

My life is in shambles. The only good thing about that is I finally have someone to blame for this fact. Instead of always living with Catholic Girl Responsibility of being the one who is in charge of life choices and decisions...

I can now blame someone else and there are very few who will argue with me. I'm sure by her bank account and its massive size, there are many, many, many like me who have been sucked into her web and have had havoc wrecked on them in the bargain.

And to think I paid money for this! Beware of this woman...

...Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way.

I'm about to start my sixth week of this saga and journey. I will not bore you with the sordid details. Let's just say, when I picked the book up, I knew who I was; fairly certain was I of my abilities and direction.

Now, none of that is true for me. And, I seem to be getting more lost than found.

I would like to tell you that I highly recommend this book, but I'd be lying and you know I can't do that.

Instead, I give you this warning: Do not read this book if you are happy with who you are and your talents. Do not read this book if you are one of the few blessed with the smugness of thinking you're all that plus a bag of chips.

Do not read this book if you're not willing to question most of what you thought about yourself.

And for the love of all that's holy, Do NOT read this book if you're not willing to consider that more might be out there for you than you had been willing to hope.

If you don't heed my advice, I do promise that Ms. Cameron will make you miserable and ruin your life, too.

The only bright spot in this nighmare is that I actually got a two-fer when I said yes to this group. Not only do I have Ms. Cameron to blame, I can also blame Kavindra of A Clear Path To Happy; it was she and her Kali loving ways that sucked me in.

And, I'm fairly certain that Ms. Cameron is the 21st century face of Kali the goddess who tears things up so they can be put back together to be the best ever.

They say in order to learn, you must be willing to forget everything you thought you knew. Holy crap, I hope I'm learning now. Either that or I've become the village idiot for nothing.

Do I know you?

Solstice Truths...Ye Must Learn

Gather round all who are called to follow the old ways...The Path. Abide a spell with this crone. The one who would share the truth of things- the truth of our Mother. It is time for the God & Goddess to join in bliss and celebrate the depth of lust, passion, trust, and love. The Wheel turns and Litha is soon upon us. Merry Meet!

In the shortest night/longest day, cast your circle, spiral your intention, draw in the power of the sun and blend it with the peace of the moon. Send your energy above and deep below. Ask a benediction on your life. Ask to be considered worthy to be one of the followers of the Goddess/God.

Let me say this, Dear Ones- I've enjoyed my time here with you in the Blog World. I'll miss it if I'm asked to leave; perhaps shunned for what I now impart. Telling you what I believe. It will not be the first time I have been escorted from the village but I'm certain it never gets easier to take.

It may be that I'm burned as a heretic by some. It could be the first time a crone was burned by her own! However, it's a risk I am willing to take. The question is, are you willing to take the risk of having a new thinking thrown your way?

Like most who walk The Path and those of us who pursue magick and craft of healing, we have been previously burned. Set ablaze. It's one of the reasons most women are reluctant to show themselves and own and foster their power. While the reluctance to act powerfully may be expected and understood, what I do not condone, will not sanction is our simpering, misguided attitudes when it comes to our Great Mother! It's time to stop believing that we are so vitally important to her future! She needs none of us to maintain her power. Let me explain:

Do you know this aspect of the Goddess?

This is Ma'at. Hail Divine One, I yield to you and do your bidding! It is said that for those individuals called by the ancient ones like the Egyptian pantheon, life will not be easy. I have found this to be true.

If you are called by Ma'at, the Goddess of Truth, Balance, Law, Quiet Strength, you must be unfailingly ready to tell the truth when it needs to be shared. So this is where I find myself today. I tell you, in preparation of the Solstice, reconsider your notions and ideas of our Mother.

We often picture her brightly colored, containing all life, not just on this earth plain but above and below. Sweet, gentle, ethereal, in need of protection and correction. In need of us to act as her sponsors for survival. To a certain point, this may be true. But we have taken this notion to a pinnacle of arrogance. We believe that only we can make Mother Earth whole and sustainable. WE ARE ARROGANT! Cheeky. Ridiculous.

Mother Earth has given us all that is needful. She is our home. She is ALL. And, while we need her to survive, she does not need us. Does Not Need Us. Self-sustaining and clearly directed, she is like the great Warrior Queens of ancient days. Like Maeve. Breede. Freya. Isis. A wise warrior and ruler who knows the ways of Humans. And loves them regardless. Loves them as her children.

Knows them and loves them for the foolish children they are, youngsters without knowledge and life experience. Without understanding. She is a mother! She understands that in her decision to raise up her young, she will be hurt countless times by their ignorance, rashness, indifference, attempts to grow, to stand alone. A mother will be hurt! But, a mother knows that it is her role to bring about opportunity to grow and become more than! Mistakes will be made. Bad ones. Some things will perish. CEASE TO BE. But Mother will remain. And, so shall we; so long as we show potential and growth.

However, be warned! If Mother ever becomes weary of us; when she's had enough of our foolishness, she will belch us off her blue marble face like a child spits watermelon seeds!

Although we can harm her, we do not possess the power to destroy her. We can only destroy ourselves. If we continue to act foolishly, Gaia may decide she has had enough. Bring an end to us. Long after any trace of Humankind is gone, Mother will remain. Because she is, what she is, what she is. She is earth, air, fire, water, and spirit.

We can and must learn to walk through our lives with more grace and quiet. We must trust Mother more than we do; trust that she is stronger, more resilient and able than we could ever imagine. Trust that our current ways of life, though difficult, will bring about growth and countless opportunities to learn to do better. As she evolves and changes, some things will go away to make room for miracles we cannot imagine. It is the natural order of things. She will not be held static by our limited ability to see the entire view.

The magick we raise during Litha contains both sides of this complex relationship meeting in the moment. We celebrate the intricate dance of our physical world and our spirit. We take account of our actions and see the crop it grows. We celebrate our successes. Mother, lets us know when we are not bringing all of our potential to things... and when we are not being what we can be. We continue to grow toward a harvest.

With honest, joyful awareness we meld with her during the lush summer solstice. We resonate with her passion. We are humbled and grateful. For as much as we, her children, can be thoughtless, cruel, and foolish, she would not have us any other way. It is the cosmic way of things for the Great to rear the Small. And we are very, very small!

Stop acting as though our Earth is a frail, doddering crone who must have you to defend her and keep her going. See her in the fullness of her power. We are her daughters and sons! We are also her lovers! Her kings & queens. We are her partner. As she is ours.

We celebrate the passion and life sustaining blending of male and female energies during this time. Recast your patronizing, condescending attitudes about what must be done to save the Earth! This is the foolish talk of politicians and others who monger fear and have agendas deeply hidden for purposes of gaining power...agendas not funded in the truth of our ways. Do not fall prey to this baneful glamour!

See the truth of her. See her with the Sun King! See him yield to her perfection. Feel her as she curls her vibrant lithe arms around his strong body. Pressing her feminine energy into heights that requires NOTHING of you other than a bowed head and a profession of love and awareness. The pledge to walk as gently as you can and teaching those in your charge to do the same is what she desires. Not for her benefit, but for ours!

As you sit in the beauty of a budding summer's night, cast a healing circle, as Mel so wonderfully explains. And pledge yourself as her child and disciple. Stop patronizing her and believing you have the power to direct her. She does not need to be saved- she needs to be adored. She does not need to be healed; we need to be healed of our juvenile, thoughtless ways. We need her; she does not need us.

She does not need us; she wants us. Like a true mother, she loves us and provides, watches, and blesses or punishes when that's what it takes to spark the divine in us. She cries for those who will not be saved. And through it all, she endures.

This Solstice, stand still in her power like the sun! Rejoice in the longest day and know its glory. Realize the truth of Her. Feel her. Love her. Stand in the light of the miracle of how insignificant, yet everything, you are to her.

This time...feel the firm, ripe, erotic, all encompassing truth of our Mother. Learn your place. Apologize for those life choices that have harmed; pledge to do better and be true. Abide with her in all actions. Honor her for all she freely gives. Do so in love and light. As above, so below, bright blessings both near & far. A blessed Litha, Dear Ones!

The Color Purple

Yes, I get teased about it. I'm all right with that; I know what I know. Have known it since I was a tiny, wee girl. It's difficult for me to imagine any other color worth holding so very high in esteem. Well, maybe red comes close. But, for most things in my world, I am all about the Royal Purple.

Queen of The Universe purple. And, these citizens of my garden prove the fantabulousness of it all. "Look at me! See me! Am I not worthy of your eyes and admiration? Look at me!" I will tell you that, I did not plant this Iris; she is a volunteer hiding within a white flowering plant that I brought home. But who are we to question these things? Indeed, We are most pleased. Look at her, isn't she stunning? She, wearing her rain-drop jewels.

Purple, "is associated with mystery, nobility, wealth, creativity, dichotomy, and intrigue." I know I am certainly intrigued by it... It is the color associated with the Crown Chakra- the seat of the Divine in you. When you wish to hear Source speak, sit quietly, breathing in & out slowly, and in your mind, picture Purple...

Purple: a dynamic and "paradoxical combination of hot red and soothing blue. (Hmm, sounds like me. A good description, as sometimes I'm that all in the same moment!) Those who are beguiled by it are typically dramatic, spiritual, intuitive, inspirational in beauty and art, protective, and very creative." We expect the very best. We are able to surprise and enthrall you. While I'm not certain about the 'enthrall' part, I do aim to give you pleasant surprises from time to time.

In nature, the varied shades of purple hold a sacred place...the dye made from purple flowers made Cleopatra smile...it was her favorite shade. She supposedly wore it often. Again, who are we to question this? And if it was good enough for The Queen of The Nile, it's good enough for This Queen...and you. So say All of Us.

It is the primary color in my world...reflected in my garden and home...part of my meditation and Reiki practice. An important marker in my Self definition. A vital piece to how you see me. A point of fascination and fun. A conversation starter. A laugh maker. And, yet, I am beginning to sense, that just possibly, with some pondering, I may need to consider that...

Other exquisite opportunities await. There's always time to open up. To learn to love and value something new and completely different from what I know. To expand. To grow.

Namaste' Till Next Time,
Holly aka The Queen of The Universe

N.B. The purple factoids in quotes come from various Internet sources; unable to determine the authors, I simply send out my cosmic thanks.

Sticks & Stones

Strumpet. Tart. Trollop. Loose. Fast. Slattern. Whore. Slut. Nice, huh? These are words that have been assigned to women courageous enough to know themselves. Those who are sexually aware. Interesting that we have so many uncomplimentary words for women who are sexual beings comfortable in their own skin.

Now, let's list the adjectives that describe sexually active males.... oh wait, there aren't any. Fascinating.

In times long gone, through wars and conquests, society shifted from matriarchal to patriarchal. For women, that's when life changed from a world where they directed their destinies and made choices, to one where they became a commodity. That's when it shifted from a world that honored the divine feminine, to one where virginity became the prize that brought the most money. That's when names like those became weapons to hold them prisoner.

That's when we lost the joy in our sexual nature. And, lost the freedom to make choices about the partners who interested us. When we lost the willingness to learn all we wanted about the glories of our sensual nature and what wonders we are. When we stopped learning how our bodies work and the instruments of pleasure they are. When we stopped seeing sex as a gift we bestow on our beloved.

In response to being held hostage, women started using sex as a weapon. As the only weapon at our disposal. Mothers taught daughters how to use it. We learned to withhold it. We learned that we can dole it out in barter for something we want. We learned that we can be cruel- as we were taught cruelty. The glory of sex became the battle of sex.

We learned that we could be ostracized if we didn't conform and become chaste. We learned to think of sex as a duty that one pays for the comforts of civilization and a mate. We learned to control our mates with it. Sex for the sheer pleasure of it became almost obsolete. Sex was driven underground.

Sex became only for procreation and no longer the sacred tool that deepens and strengthens the bond between mates. But, the natural desire for sex wasn't eliminated. Even though the loss of the ease and comfort it brings most certainly was. Spontaneity was lost. The mystery turned into something dirty, illicit. A topic to be ignored.

All of this happened to control females. All of these names were created to keep us in bondage. To make us less-than. To ignore a major part of the beauty of life. To remain cut off from our true nature and power. To be in internal struggle with ourselves and our mates. Worse still, women came to use these words on other women. Jealous of other women who wouldn't yield, who continued to be sensual and responsive.

All of this happened long ago. And, while not easily understood now, those ideas of sex and being sexually active still carry through our lives. Shouldn't we question these things? Shouldn't we shed notions that no longer serve us? Shouldn't we love the natural power of being a sexual being? Shouldn't we all, male and female, strive to bring back the Divine Feminine?

Isn't it time for women to know that sticks and stones may break our bones, but names can never hurt us?

Holly
