It goes like this:
"Doctor's office, can I help you?"
"Yes, I have a medical emergency and I wonder if the doctor has time to see me today!?"
"An emergency? Can you please calm down and explain so I can help you?"
"Yes, but this is pretty serious and I need to talk with her as soon as possible."
"I understand but you'll have to give me some information....what is your concern?"
"Well, I was watching television this morning and was made aware, thank gawd, that I have a serious medical condition that I should ask the Doctor about. Brooke Shields told me that I have hypotrichosis!!!"
"Excuse me, what did you say you have?"
"Hypotrichosis; I have skimpy eyelashes and I need to see her right away. This is serious! They have a new drug out for it called Latisse and I should come in to get started on it ASAP!"
"You are an idiot. However, I can fit you in our schedule on Wednesday, 2014. Does that work for you?!"
That should be the answer, but it won't be because we've all lost our minds.
Are you freaking kidding me?! Now we have this to worry about? Really? REALLY???? Can we be so flipping vain and foolish that we can afford to worry about this? Is it really a quality of life issue? When there are so many people struggling every day with true life threatening issues, diseases, emotional concerns? Eye-lashes...we are now worried about eye lashes.
AAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Look, let me just say, I am a huge believer in better living through chemicals! If there is a medication that is safe and will help improve the quality of your life, for all that's holy at least give it a try! But, really, are your eye lashes and the luxurious nature of them really keeping you up at night and feeling less than your best? Really? Because if that's your only concern? I want your efffin' life!!!!!
Stop!! Take a look! This is a spirit who is in real need. This is an individual who needs more than they have. These are eyelashes that we should be concerned about. For the love of all that's holy!

I started reading this and I was wondering what you were leading up to then you got to the eyelash part and I started cracking up! We have been in laughable disgust over these commercials! I can NOT believe this is a SERIOUS condition that people are SERIOUSLY depressed and devastated from...but then again what do I know?
love the pics you posted you make a wonderful point...we need to take the time and reassess what is REALLY important and in urgent need of our care and love.
:-)
wow...I couldn't agree with you more if I tried !
I am with you here hon!! I was a bit blown away myself. What was relly shocking to me..that this product can damagage your eyes - all for nicer eyelashes..whatever!! Foolishness!!
The picture of the child said it all hon!! There are more important things to concern ourselves with!!! Love you, Sarah
It would seem I cannot type or spell today....geesh....
You are fired up today Snarky Sister!
Although I am a Botox junkie, I totally agree wth you on this one. And I'll also add that the amount the eyelash medication costs for one patient would feed a small third would country for an entire week.
Grrrrrrrrr!
xo
This commercial has annoyed the heck out of me from the first time I saw it! Wouldn't life be grand if all we had to worry about were skimpy eyelashes!
I, like, consisdered using Latrisse after seeing Brooke, because, I mean, I totally live near Hollywood and you know, it would practically make me feel complete and all? But then they said it might make my blue eyes turn brown? And I was like, totally, No Way! That's just bogus. I told Brooke that, too, when I saw her at Starbucks. I mean, someone neeeded to.
:p)
Great post, Holly! THANK YOU!
I couldn't agree with you more!!! This insanity is placing undue pressure not only on us to be 'perfect' but what about the young women of today...is there any hope for them? Have we become so self absorbed that this tops our priority list? Seriously, the world has bigger problems that need addressing.
A great post! Life would be so beautiful if that were the biggest concern we had. The last picture is real life. Thanks for sharing.
A-effing-men!!
I haven't seen this fabulous piece of advertising...seeing as how I've managed to wean myself off television...and now I"m really glad I did because I might have put my fist through the screen and that would have really upset my family.
*sigh*
I almost feel ashamed to have such a blessed life sometimes...but then I remember that my eyelashes just aren't as plump and luxurious as they used to be and I become appropriately desolate...
What does this say about us, I mean...really?
Thank you Holly ... I wish we could spread your blog to a much wider circle ... the crazys need a wake-up call and you do it so well.
I am so with you on this one Holly. When I first saw those commercials about skimpy eyelashes....well, you've described my thoughts with your post here. Come on, eyelashes, really? Makes me wonder what the world is coming to......
Thanks Holly, you are a treasure.
The world continues to shock me Holly, how vain we have become. Your last picture hit the nail in the head. Scary times, I couldnt agree more with you!
Oh my goodness! I thought that all I had to worry about was a thick waistline and now I find I have to worry about thin eyelashes as well! Good gracious! I loved your post Holly, by the way. It has started my day with a good chuckle. Tinged, I might add, with some unease that people really take this sort of thing seriously!
AMEN !! to this.. these people need to get out in the real world.. go live where Mother Theresa walked.. go live where a hair brush is a luxury... give some of the bloody money that they make for being 'famous', to the poor.
Honestly, most people like Ms. B Shields, make me puke. (but would they get this post at all??)
oh and also bloody get a grip Ms. Shields... go see chemotherapy patients who have no eyelashes at all...
and then we have the botox crap, but I won't start on that.... (sorry Holly, stuff like this makes me fuming mad and crazy) - but the way you put it, did have me laughing!
Well I haven't seen this commercial, but I do wish I had been sitting in front of a tv with you and all your commenters/fans watching together when it came on. We could have had such a laugh, the popcorn would have been all over the couch and floor we would have been hooting and hollering so much.
But you are right that there is a very sad and scary side to all this - are we really spending money on stuff like this and not sending it to the foodbank or the shelter?
And then I have to wonder where my own vanity and stupidity is making me blind in my own life. Damn you, why do you always have to make me think? And I'm still mad at you for getting onboard with my enemy, Julia Cameron!
Not to seem cruel - but couldn't Brooke just comb over a few of her eyebrows? With that unibrow she had going in the past, no one could see her eyelashes.
Well said!
Wow... I've missed this commercial -- and all the commercials -- since I quit watching television. Best decision I ever made, apparently, because I do believe I have skimpy eyelashes. That is, they haven't been retouched in photoshop or glued on ... I don't even wear mascara. I must be some kind of dirty hippie or something.
Seriously, I meet women who are waking up to this stuff all the time, realizing there's a whole world of zombified people just trying to make us feel bad about how unique and beautiful we all already look so that we'll continue to support the umpteen-billion-gazillion-dollar makeup and fashion and plastic surgery racket -- er, industry.
I cannot wait till enough of us wake up to this sickness to put it all out of business! And turn that money and energy toward solving our real problems and creative living. Hurrah for Utopia!
Love the ranting facet to your personality, Holly. It's so wonderful and clever and funny! You crack me up :)
Brilliant Holly... well said.
I haven't seen the advertisement that you're speaking about and doubt that it will arrive here.
I like to think that there would be an uproar if it did.
I guess that dickheads have a right to their say too, shame that they get so much air time.
best wishes always
ribbon :)
Well done Holly, you should run for senate, you got me all fired up girl....oh just a minute, I dropped an eyelash,,,as Toni would say, sHITE. I will never be amazed by anything. i have not seen this here at all...but we usually are after you guys.
Great post Holly! The world is a weird place sometimes when we worry about such things. Craziness indeed.
I've never heard of anything so ridiculous in my entire life.
"Okay, everyone with thin eyelash issues, line up over here please! I've got a cure! March as fast as you can to the nearest homeless shelter and volunteer there for one week. I don't think your eyelashes will seem such a problem afterward."
Sheesh.
Okay. This has just reinforced my conviction never to watch another commercial again. Seriously. We must have way too much money and time for this shizz to even exist. *Shaking my head*
But thick eyelashes are so pretty! Now I'm curious - will the public option cover this? I sure hope not!!!
The first time I saw these commercials, it was almost a relief. Something SO stupid, I can't even be bothered to feel inadequate about it! When is the last time you stared at someone because their eyelashes were skimpy?!
